Ultimate: Strategy 101
DESCRIPTION    RULES    TERMS    STRATEGY    SPIRIT

Basic Offense:
• 3 Handlers, 2 Middles, 2 Longs
• The Handlers keep the disc moving
• Middles cut for the Handlers
• Longs make continuation cuts for Middles
• Offense should flow
• Continuous cuts are started while the disc is in the air.
• When making a cut and the disc is not thrown to you, clear out quickly
• Be patient with your throws. You have 10 seconds. Value the disc!

Basic Defense:
• Any contact between players is a foul, so the defender has to make each play clean or it does not count
Any incomplete pass is a change of possession. A knock-down is often as good as an interception, but be beware of the accidental tip to your opponent
• Person-to-person is the most common defense. Each defender covers one offensive player all over the field for an entire point.

Forcing & Marking:
• The Marker is the player guarding the thrower. Their goal is usually to deny one throw (either forehand or backhand) so that their teammates have less area to cover. In other words, the marker attempts to “force” the offensive player to throw in only one direction. Most teams will either force the thrower towards the sideline (“trap”) or towards the middle (“force middle”). Other terms are “forcing home” (forcing to where your team is sitting) or “forcing away” (forcing the opposite side of the field from where your team is sitting).
• A marker should always keep her/his hands low.
• Always clearly communicate forces and switches
• On a turnover, pick-up the closest person to you.
• If there is a sideline force, all defenders should be between the sideline and their person (vice versa for a middle force). In other words, be between the person you’re covering and the side of the field being forced.
