DESCRIPTION RULES TERMS STRATEGY SPIRIT
Pick: A violation that occurs when a defensive players cannot cover her/his opponent because of bodily interference by another player. It is a dangerous play in Ultimate because of the speed with which players are running. Picks don’t have to be intentional and you can be picked by your own teammate.
Pivot: A technique similar to that used in basketball where the thrower rotates on the ball or toes of the pivot foot in order to change body position for greater throwing range of motion.
Pivot Foot: The foot upon which the thrower pivots. Usually, it is the opposite foot of the throwing hand.
Pull: A long throw downfield that initiates a point. The throw is made by a defensive players standing on or behind the goal line.
Receiver: An offensive players in position to receive a pass from a thrower.
Spirit of the Game: The underlying concept of fair play inherent in all respects of the sport of Ultimate.
Stall: When the marker reaches the end of the stall count (ten) before the offensive player has released the disc.
Stall count: The amount of time the offensive players with the disc has to throw. The stall count must be called aloud by the marker at a reasonable pace, beginning with “stalling, one, two, three...” The player calling the stall must be within 3 meters of the person with the disc.
Strip: When the disc is forcibly knocked from the offensive player’s hands. The disc is returned to the offensive player’s possession and the stall count goes back to 0, unless the call is contested.
Swing Pass: A pass used to move the disc laterally across the field; often used in conjunction with the dump.
Travel: An offensive advantage gained by the thrower when she or he takes a step, or picks up or drags her/his pivot foot during the throw. The disc is brought back to the thrower for a replay, except in the case where the throw resulted in a turnover. |
